Law on "Citizenship" - Parliamentary Bureau session discusses amendments to the law

The amendments to the Law on "Citizenship" were discussed at the Bureau sitting. According to the amendments, the president will not have the competence to regulate issues related to the issue of citizenship.

The rule of granting and terminating of citizenship will be determined by the resolution of the Commission instead of the President"s order.

"This organic law conducts concrete conditions in which case dual citizenship can be granted . This right could be enjoyed by refugees, IDPs, as well as the grace circumstances related to the special merit, as well as investments and other circumstances, that will make easier dual citizenship rule, "- said the Chairwoman of the Committee on Legal Affairs Eka Beselia.

The opposition has comments regarding the draft law. The MPs believe that the changes will diminish the president"s institution.

Roman Gotsiridze, the chairperson of the National Movement faction says that the law is both positive and negative.

"On the one hand, the President is out of the game and it reduces the bureaucratic stages, on the other hand, the issue of granting citizenship at the level of commission means that it will actually will be controlled by the State
Security," said Roman Gotsiridze.

Gigi Tsereteli, chairperson of the parliamentary faction "European Georgia - Movement for Freedom", has commented on the law that he does not agree with the part that the president"s functions are diminished.
