According to the BBC, he had a bullet in the back and died before being taken to hospital.

Ukrainian police linked Babchenko"s murder to his journalistic activities.

In recent years he has often criticized Russia"s policy and its intervention in eastern Ukraine. In 2017, due to threats, he left Russia and moved to live in Ukraine.
