Unprecedented case of alleged bribing of voters - NGO sector demands prosecution to get interested in initiative

Non-governmental organizations call on the Prosecutor"s Office to get interested in the initiative of the government. The case concerns the elimination of excessive loans, the initiative announced by the Prime Minister, which implies the writing off of debts.

The civil sector thinks it is an unprecedented instance of alleged bribing of voters and is aimed to support Salome Zurabishvili in the second round of the presidential election.

"In the given initiative there may be signs of voter bribery. Accordingly, the authorized authorities should examine this fact and, in case the violation is confirmed show appropriate reaction. This initiative may be the bribery of voters pertaining to Article 164 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which envisages a fine or imprisonment for 3 years, "-said Rati Tinikashvili, lawyer of the Georgian Young Lawyers" Association.

According to their assessment, what negotiations were held with the banking sector and various financial institutions regarding the removal of debt is unlnown.

The statement of the civil sector was followed by response of the Prosecutor"s Office. According to the investigative agency, this is a private agreement dealing with the majority of the population. The agency will make a relevant decision in case of existence of crime marks.
