President Shevardnadze resigned after a week-long mass protest rally - and his duties were imposed on temporary parliamentary chairperson.
Apart from the election results, the reason for the dissatisfaction of the population was the corrupt environment and hard social conditions in the country.
After the Rose Revolution of 2003, United National Movement came to power.
