70 years have passed since NATO"s creation. The 12 countries signed the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949, in Washington.
In case of attack on any member of the Alliance, the Alliance agreed on a joint action.
After 70 years NATO is facing new challenges, one of which is Russian aggression - the US Secretary of State said at the meeting with the Alliance"s Foreign Ministers in Washington. During his speech, Mike Pompey talked about strengthening the NATO"s military unit in the Black Sea region with the view of strengthening the Alliance"s position.
"When the treaty was signed on April 4, 1949, President Harry Truman called NATO a" shield against aggression.
"Some thought that NATO"s idea was aggressive, but the historical hopes of the 12 founding countries were justified.Together with the old challenges, we are facing new challenges. These are Russia"s aggression, mass migration, and weaknesses caused by new technologies. An unstable geopolitical environment was created. We"re growing our presence in the Balkans and the Black Sea regions, we are upholding our forces and improving the sustainability of modern hybrid and cyber threats, "said Mike Pompey.
