Attitude towards LGBT community, religious minorities and gender issues in Georgia still problematic - Ombudsman’s 2019 report

Despite the creation of legislative safeguards, unfortunately, the situation of the realization of the right to equality is still critical in Georgia and the state agencies do not have a specific policy on the principle of equality. Such a statement made the Public Defender of Georgia while presenting the 2019 special report on equality.

According to Nino Lomjaria, during 2019, the Ombudsman reviewed 155 new cases of alleged discrimination, and launched proceedings on their own initiative into 13 cases.

“Gender-based discrimination had the highest rates, which was followed by discrimination on the grounds of religion, different opinion, gender identity, sexual orientation and disability, and different political views.

The number of applications regarding alleged discrimination on grounds of different and political views has not changed significantly compared to the previous years”, - said the Public Defender.
