Public discussion of constitutional amendments underway in Rustavi

A public discussion of the draft constitution is about to begin in Lortkipanidze Theater in Rustavi. The Parliament`s Speaker, MPs and other politicians have already gathered at the site. President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili is not attending today`s discussion.

Irma Inashvili, a representative of the Alliance of Patriots, states that the draft of constitutional amendments should be delivered to the public before the meeting and it would be better if the representatives of the Georgian Dream did not attend the discussions.

"There are minuses, there are pluses, both of them should be said. It is very regrettable that the draft constitution has not been printed before the meetings for the population to have idea about changes.Secondly, a broader format would have been better, "-said Irma Inashvili.

Before the beginning of the public discussion, politicians talked about the issues that they would focus on.

"The main issues on which we have our positions concern primarily the electoral system and the so-called " Bonus mandate distribution rule", which is absolutely unfair. This is, of course, the direct election of the president and there are also other questions that concern the court system, the Public Defender`s Office and the place of the Parliament, "- said Gigi Tsereteli, the Chairman of the European Georgia.

The majority believe that meeting in Rustavi will be as interesting as in other cities. Mamuka Mdinaradze, chairperson of the Georgian Dream faction, thinks that there will be critical questions at today`s discussion.

"The representatives of this city will be here, we will listen to them carefully and try to give full answers," Mamuka Mdinaradze said.

Representatives of local self-government and education system are attending the public discussion of the constitution. Their questions are mainly related to the election of the president, the electoral system and the issue of integrity of the country.
