The southern region of Italy has been captivated by a "spectacular" waterspout stirring up waters off the coast.

Eyewitnesses said the whirling column of air and water lifted containers in the city"s port area. There were no reports of any injuries.

Local media reports that heavy wind has unrooted trees and damaged electricity lines, leaving thousands of people without electricity and communications.
