Citizen of Armenia tried to export radioactive materials to the Russian Federation through the territory of Georgia. State Security Service of Georgia has arrested the person on the fact of illegal treatment of radioactive materials and violation of customs rules.
According to the State Security Service, the investigation concluded that the lorry driven by the Armenian citizen in the territory of Georgia intended to cross the border of the Russian Federation with the 4 pack of "thorium".
"According to the expertise, the total weight of these packs is 71.63 kg and they contain radioactive isotope "thorium 232 ", which belongs to the nuclear material category. The substance is extremely dangerous for a human being. The citizen of Armenia is arrested and sentenced to imprisonment by the Tbilisi City Court."
The investigation is on-going on the fact of illicit treatment and transportation of radioactive materials (Article 230, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code of Georgia and Article 214, Part 4 of the Criminal Code of Georgia) which envisages imprisonment from 5 to 10 years.
The investigation is conducted by the Investigative Main Division of the Counterintelligence Department of the State Security Service.
