Jacob Blake shooting: teenager arrested after two killed in Wisconsin protests

A 17-year-old has been arrested after two people were killed near protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where a police shooting of a black man sparked national outrage and prompted the postponement of Wednesday evening’s National Basketball Association playoff games.

Josh Kaul, Wisconsin attorney-general, also released the name of the police officer who shot the man - Rusten Sheskey - and more details about the incident.

The upheaval began on Sunday, when the police officer in the small Midwestern city shot resident Jacob Blake Jr, aged 29, touching off several nights of unrest and calls to hold the officers accountable. Daniel Miskinis, Kenosha’s police chief, said three officers were on leave pending an investigation of that shooting.

The Milwaukee Bucks basketball team, which is based about 40 miles away from Kenosha, said on Wednesday it would boycott a playoff game in protest of Mr Blake’s shooting. The NBA then announced that all games scheduled for the evening would be postponed.

On Tuesday, two people were killed and another was injured blocks away from a stand-off between police and protesters near Kenosha’s courthouse. Miskinis said the deceased victims were a 36-year-old resident of Kenosha and a 26-year-old resident of nearby Silver Lake, Wisconsin. A 26-year-old from the small city of West Allis, Wisconsin, was injured.

Officials in Lake County, Illinois, confirmed that Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old from Antioch, Illinois, had been taken into custody and will probably be charged in Wisconsin with first-degree murder in connection with Tuesday’s shootings. Antioch is about 20 miles south-west of Kenosha.
