An auction of a number of deceased Chicago gangster Al Capone’s possessions took in at least USD 3 million over the weekend.
Capone’s three surviving granddaughters held the auction in California and sold off a number of items, including what was described as the crime boss’ favorite gun, Colt .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol, which went for USD 860,000, the Chicago Tribune reports.
“A Century of Notoriety: The Estate of Al Capone”, - was held at a private club in Sacramento and attracted nearly 1,000 registered bidders, including 150 who attended the nearly four-hour-long event in person.
A letter Capone wrote from prison on Alcatraz to his only son, Sonny, was purchased for USD 56,700.
A bear-shaped humidor, jewelry, fashion accessories and family photographs were also sold.
The auction drew so much interest that online bidders overwhelmed the seller’s website.
