Roman Abramovich hastily selling UK properties, MP claims

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is in the process of selling his London property, Parliament has heard, writes The Mirror.

MP Chris Bryant, who last week called for the Russian to be banned from owning the Premier League club and to have his home seized, claimed Abramovich is making the move because he is “terrified of being sanctioned”.

The Blues owner issued a statement over the weekend detailing plans to hand over “stewardship and care” of Chelsea Football Club to its charitable trust, amid calls for sanctions to be imposed on individuals with ties to Russian president.

Abramovich has denied links with Vladimer Putin, who has sanctioned a number of missile strikes on neighbouring Ukraine, and representatives for the Chelsea owner have been contacted for comment on Bryant’s claims about the property.

Over the weekend, the oligarch announced he would hand over the “stewardship and care” of Chelsea football club to the trustees of its charitable foundation, though the legal implications of that move remain unclear. On Monday, his spokesperson said he was “trying to help” in the Russia-Ukraine conflict after being “contacted by the Ukrainian side for support in achieving a peaceful resolution”.

The following day a number of reporters arrived outside Abramovich’s 15-bedroom mansion on Kensington Palace Gardens in west London after rumours that a potential buyer was due for a lunchtime tour of the property, which was bought for £90m in 2009.
