Azerbaijan and Georgia together maintain peace and security in the region - Mazahir Efendiyev, a deputy of Milli Majlis

Today, as the locomotive state of the region, the country with which Azerbaijan has established relations in various fields in the South Caucasus is Georgia, says Mazahir Efendiyev, a deputy of the Milli Majlis, in a statement to AZERTAC.

“In particular, the nearly 30-year war with Armenia has increased Georgia’s geopolitical importance in the region. In addition, the strong historical ties formed between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Georgia, who have lived peacefully in the South Caucasus for centuries, and the relations developed in security, defense, economy, trade, energy, transport-logistics, tourism, cultural-humanitarian and other fields are rooted in mutual respect and equal friendship”.

According to him, the friendly relations between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Georgia have very deep historical roots.

“The historical experience of our relations shows that our destinies are also largely similar and interconnected. This historical experience dictates to us to be partners, to protect our independence, peace and security in the region, and to integrate together into the civilized world.

After gaining its independence for the second time in 1991, one of the main goals facing Azerbaijan was to establish high-level relations with neighboring states and to protect security in the South Caucasus. It was when Great Leader Heydar Aliyev announced the country’s foreign policy priorities in 1993, skillfully using his experience and existing opportunities, he further strengthened the good-neighborly relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan thanks to his friendship with the President of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze, which began in the Soviet era. Thus, activities were launched based on new challenges to further enrich the historical ties of our peoples, as well as to eliminate hotbeds of conflict in the South Caucasus. Today, Azerbaijan and Georgia are not only neighbors and friends, but also important strategic partners. "The "Treaty on Strengthening Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Security between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Georgia", signed on March 8, 1996, is the document that laid the foundation for the strategic partnership between our countries. Numerous mutual visits have been carried out at the highest and highest levels in the past period, and more than 125 documents have been signed between our countries so far”.

Saying that Azerbaijan has always been a supporter of development, prosperity, and stability in Georgia, Efendiyev noted that the elevation of neighborly and friendly relations between our countries to the level of strategic cooperation and even alliance ensures stability and security in the region.

“As a result of many years of successful cooperation in the economic sphere, Azerbaijan has invested USD 3.6 billion in the Georgian economy. At the same time, the implementation of important energy and transport projects that bring great dividends to both countries can be evaluated as the most vivid example of active partnership for the whole world. Thus, the continuously developing partnership between Azerbaijan and Georgia, which plays the role of a bridge between Europe and Asia, serves not only the economic and political situation of the region, but also the growth of the global economy. It should be noted that our country currently exports natural gas to 11 countries through Georgian transit, and work is successfully continuing to implement the Middle Corridor project, which covers a wide geography”.
