Pope Francis asks for "simple" burial in his will shared by Vatican

The Vatican has released Pope Francis` will hours after announcing the 88-year-old’s death.

After his final public appearance on Easter Sunday, Pope Francis died on Monday, April 21. The pontiff resided at Rome`s Gemelli University Hospital for most of the year due to a litany of health issues before he succumbed to a stroke and irreversible heart failure.

In his will, dated June 29, 2022, Pope Francis asks to be buried inside the burial niche between Chapel of the Salus Populi Romani and Sforza Chapel, which are located within the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. This breaks from tradition, as many of Pope Francis` predecessors have been buried inside the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica, Reuters reported.

The late pontiff also left instructions for how he`d like his tomb to be prepared.

"The tomb should be in the ground; simple, without particular ornamentation, and bearing only the inscription: Franciscus", - the will states.
