Parliament of Georgia to adopt special statement in response to MEGOBARI Act supported by US House of Representatives

The Parliament of Georgia will adopt a special statement in response to the MEGOBARI Act supported by the US House of Representatives.

The draft statement has already been initiated in the legislature. The initiators are the Speaker of the Parliament, leaders of the Georgian Dream faction, as well as the political groups in the Parliament.

The draft statement has been submitted to the Foreign Relations Committee for consideration. Its discussion will take place at the session tomorrow, May 14.

"Society observed today the Prime Minister`s open letter to the US President, which, among other issues, addresses the MEGOBARI Act.

Simultaneously, we have prepared a parliamentary statement, crafted with the participation of all factions and political groups, to articulate our stance and evaluations regarding this legislation. The initiative originated jointly from me, as the Chair of Parliament, and the leaders of all factions and political groups. Therefore, this effort is entirely on behalf of the Parliament. It will be forwarded to the Foreign Relations Committee as the lead committee. I will serve as the rapporteur on this issue, and discussions are scheduled to take place tomorrow both within the committee and during the plenary session.

Overall, I would like to note that the so-called MEGOBARI Act, which has been renamed - presumably to mask its true nature, as it includes everything but friendship - rests on false premises and fundamentally distorts reality, especially the realities within Georgia. Our goal is to demonstrate clearly, through well-founded arguments and solid facts, what the actual situation is.

We aim to reaffirm our assessment that the measures enacted by the House of Representatives under this Act are, in essence, the opposite of friendship. The public will have the opportunity to follow the debate on this issue. Rest assured, the Parliament will definitely express its position through this official statement", - said Shalva Papuashvili.
