Spending money in another country not just accounting, donors must take responsibility for actions of NGOs they fund - Papuashvili

Spending money in another country not just accounting, donors must take responsibility for actions of NGOs they fund, said the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, while presenting the activity report of the 10th convocation Parliament.

“After failures among political parties and media attempts, the stage at Rustaveli was overtaken by NGOs, setting another revolutionary scenario in motion. These forces, explicitly mentioned in the EU candidate criteria as needing involvement in decision-making at all government levels, quickly demanded that Parliament dismiss the government and form a new cabinet with NGO participation - veto power included.

Traditionally focused on donor goodwill and disconnected from public sentiment, NGOs missed the mood of the people. Their revolutionary attempt ultimately failed.

The elevation of foreign-funded organisations to the stage of power struggle was too much even for a country as open to donors as ours. In numerous meetings, both domestically and abroad, we emphasized that spending money in another country is not just accounting - donors must take responsibility for the actions of the NGOs they fund. The simplest path would be transparency in funding and accountability before the Georgian people. Instead, we faced a deaf wall. Donors remained focused on their own agendas, disregarding the concerns of the Georgian public”, - said Shalva Papuashvili.
