Checkpoint in the village of Chorchana serves no purpose and fails to ensure the security of the village – resident of Chorchana, Elguja Kharazishvili

The Interim Fact-Finding Commission on the Activities of the Regime, the Political Leaders of the Regime of 2003-2012 and the Activity of the Incumbent and Former Officials in the Political Unions since 2003 up to today deliberated on information, provided by the General Koba Kobaladze, and the resident of the village of Chorchana, Elguja Kharazishvili.

As reported by Koba Kobaladze, the Russia-Georgia military operations in 2008 exposed the state administrative branch’s profound incompetence and complete collapse. According to him, the then high officials were dispatched to the occupants as their “footmen”, serving as their guides.

As he noted, none of the military tactics units (intelligence, logistics, engineering etc.) have been communicating during the military operations, thus, failing to even evacuate the population or make proper calculations. Consequently, the then authorities were compelled to find a way to conceal the August war tragedy, fabricating the purported “Mukhrovani mutiny” for this purpose.

Kobaladze provided that when, on May 5, 2009, he was arrested in the street during his interview with the media, he knew nothing about “Mukhrovani mutiny”. Even the National Guard stationed on Mukhrovani base was not aware of the alleged “mutiny”, only hearing about it from the news on TV.

“I was accused in the Court of the alleged mobilization of the armed troops with the plan to occupy the strategic facilities and extinct the supreme officials of the country”, - he stated.

The special operation on the occasion of the “Mukhrovani mutiny” resulted in the demise of Giorgi Krialashvili; furthermore, Koba Otanadze and Levan Amiridze were almost executed, however they survived.

In response to Chairperson of the Commission, Tea Tsulukiani’s inquiry regarding the role of the Defence Minister during the suppression of the “Mukhrovani mutiny,” the following statement was made: “All accounts provided by you suggest that, similar to the August War of 2008, the Interior Minister, Vano Merabishvili held all the necessary leverage. As evidenced by the video footage, he required that two corpses be provided. As you report, he had an envoy informing him from the Mukhrovani base. Later, he even personally visited the base to control the processes firsthand. Now I wonder, where was the Defense Minister”?

In response, Kobaladze noted that the minutes of the court trials revealed that the central link of the Defense Ministry was disabled. According to him, the court proceedings demonstrated that neither disobedience nor mutiny had taken place on the Mukhrovani base. As he observed, the commandments engaged in discussions only regarding the extent of their moral commitment to participate in the May 26th parade, given the ongoing absence of their army comrades.

The factual circumstances deviated from reality to the extent that the court declared them innocent of treachery.

“My allegations solely focused on the unlawful storage of the weapons, which resulted in my incarceration for over nine months in solitary confinement. Prior to my confinement, I was visited by representatives of various NGOs, who, in their assessments, concluded that the conditions I was subjected to on a daily basis constituted torture”, - he asserted.

The resident of the village of Chorchana, Elguja Kharazishvili, reported on the developments after the opening of the checkpoint in the village of Chorchana in 2019. According to his account, soon after the opening of the checkpoint, the Russian occupation forces moved forward for about 1,5 km, opened their checkpoint on the territory of the village Tsagveli, occupied 100 hectares of the woods and installed the barbed wires.

Consequently, the local residents, who had been relying on the woods for their sustenance, were deprived of this territory. As per his assessment, the checkpoint in the village of Chorchana serves no purpose and fails to ensure the security of the village.
