Georgia–Hungary Intergovernmental Summit gets held in Budapest and Co-Chaired by Prime Ministers Irakli Kobakhidze and Viktor Orban

The second session of the Georgia-Hungary Intergovernmental Commission took place in Budapest and was co-chaired by Irakli Kobakhidze, Prime Minister of Georgia and Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary.

The summit brought together members of both governments and focused on deepening sectoral cooperation. Discussions highlighted the potential for enhanced collaboration in areas such as energy, connectivity, environmental protection, agriculture, defense, law enforcement, justice, healthcare, education and culture.

Irakli Kobakhidze thanked his Hungarian counterpart for hosting the Georgian delegation and organizing the summit: “Your leadership is exemplary for us - the way you guide your country, safeguard Hungary’s national interests and preserve its identity. We believe that our partnership is built on shared values and this value-based unity is the foundation of the strong friendship between our countries and governments. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for Hungary’s unwavering support of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and especially for your strong support towards our European integration path. Your role was vital when Georgia was granted the status of an EU Candidate Country and your continued support as we progress towards the EU is of great importance to the Georgian people. Strengthening bilateral ties with Hungary is a top priority for us.

Prime Minister emphasized that alongside strong political relations, there is significant untapped potential in trade and economic cooperation: “We are eager to fully unlock this potential. Georgia and Hungary have considerable opportunities to enhance their economic relations. We are interested in deepening cooperation in all sectors - from energy and connectivity to education, culture, justice and public health. Further development of sector-specific formats within our intergovernmental commission will be crucial for this effort. We also welcome the progress in our legal frameworks, which underpin our growing partnership”.

Viktor Orbán underlined the significance of the summit as a format, noting its rare application in Hungary’s diplomatic practice.

“This format means that our entire government cooperates with yours - not just individual ministries. Such comprehensive engagement is rare. It is a great honor to work with you, Prime Minister. Hungary holds deep respect for history and your country has a remarkable Christian legacy - even older than ours. Both our nations cherish freedom, patriotism and national pride - values that, sadly, are often shunned in today’s West. We are honored by your visit and the results you have achieved in Georgia. In today’s fragile European economy, 7% growth is extraordinary - a truly stellar accomplishment. We understand the immense effort it took and admire your leadership”, - said the Prime Minister of Hungary.

As part of the summit, several cooperation agreements were signed in the fields of environmental protection, agriculture, innovation and sports. The Prime Ministers also signed the Declaration of the Second Georgia-Hungary Intergovernmental Summit.
