Turmoil in Batumi, suicide of Demur Sturua, wire tapping cases, cyanide scandal, Rustavi2 case - Ombudsman`s report indicates existence of violations

The incident that happened in Batumi on March 11-12 was included in the annual report of the Public Defender. Ombudsman criticizes the appropriate state agencies for inadequate response .

Ombudsman requires a thorough investigation of the case of 22-year-old Demur Sturua who committed suicide in Samtredia . In the letter wriitten to family members he explained in details how he was blackmailed by a police officer whose name he indicated in the letter.

Ombudsman consideres detention for for drug crimes unconstitutional and an inhumane punishment and demands the abolishment of the practice.

and improper response to reduce the incidence of the Ombudsman calls on teh Government to create an independent investigative agency which will investigate offenses conducted by law enforcement officials.

Ucha Nanuashvili calls on investigative agencies to act in time and efficiently and hold all those people responsible for creation, finding and releasing footages reflecting private life.

According to him, footages reflecting public persons’ private life were permanently published on the net through the year of 2016… The Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has not still found those that released the footages on the net,’ reads the report.

Ombudsman also comments on the so-called cyanide case. According to him, the government has violated the rights of the accused while imposing the obligation not to reveal information and speak publicly about the allegations.

The Ombudsman’s report also refers to freedom of media and developments concerning Public Broadcaster and Rustavi 2.

According to the Ombudsman, the threat of the government’s possible interference with freedom must be ruled out and a new bill on freedom of information must also be initiated.

Ombudsman`s report will be presented in the Parliament on April 11.
