Working poverty in Georgia is at new historic low - International Labour Organisation

The International Labour Organisation [ILO] released the Working Poverty Index [WPI]. According to the data, 2.28% of the employed population in Georgia were below the international poverty line [IPL] in 2023, which is a new historic low.

The WPI examines the share of people below the IPL among the employed population.

According to the data, the level of working poverty in Georgia has decreased by 2.5 times in 10 years, and by almost 3.5 times compared to the data of 2012.

The ILO also shared information on how the figures changed between 2000 and 2023 and the data reveals that the sharp reduction of working poverty in Georgia started in 2012.

On average, 11% of the employed population were below the IPL between 2000 and 2003. The situation practically didn’t change between 2004 and 2012, when, on average, every tenth employee was below the IPL.

The situation changed substantially between 2013 and 2023. During this period, the level of working poverty in Georgia amounted to 3.3% on average, and therefore every 30th employed person was below the IPL. The 2023 data reveals that 2.28% of the employed population are below the IPL, that is, on average, every 44th person, which is a new historic low for Georgia.
