Today, I came to express support to Rustavi2 team - Ambassador of France to Georgia, Pascal Meunier

Rustavi 2 Broadcasting Company Director General had a meeting with representatives of Diplomatic Corps. Gvaramia provided the diplomats with detailed information regarding the TV station`s litigation process and future action plan.

"Today I have come to support the team of Rustavi2. Your TV is very popular, a lot of people watch your programs. The fact that you have a positive, constructive and critical approach to the news, is very important. when there is a constitutional majority in the Parliament and the government feels quiet regarding the parliamentary support of their policy , NGOs, civil society and the media play an especially important role. That is why the French Embassy made an exception and made a statement on Georgia`s democracy. I am sure the government will listen to us. We do not interfere in the court`s decision and, as such, the Court`s decision is not important, it is important what results will follow this decision, "- said the Ambassador of France to Georgia, Pascal Meunier.

According to him, regardless of ownership, independence of Rustavi 2 must be maintained and its editorial policy must remain the same as it is today. Pascal Meunier said that the Strasbourg decision was unexpected for them. He also spoke about the visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs in Strasbourg.

"The European Court has received such a decision in connection with the freedom of media for the first time and thus showed that it is an important issue . In the EU everyone understands that Rustavi2 has become a symbol of freedom of expression in Georgia. That"s why you have a lot of supporters. I have read that the Foreign Minister left for Strasbourg. It is also clear that all parties express their opinion to the Court. We do not want to interfere in the affairs of the court, but it should be noted that the independence of the judiciary is a true guarantee of democracy, and we want to hope that the government would not interfere in the affairs of the court, "- said Pascal Meunier
