752 hectares destroyed by fire in Borjomi - government is trying to hide information

The authorities are trying to hide information on fire in the Borjomi Gorge,. The head of the government has released inaccurate information about the scale of fire.

According to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the fire has destroyed three times smaller area thanindicated on the National Forest Agency`s official map.

The agency"s specialists, based on satellite maps, talk about 752 hectares of land that was destroyed by fire. More than 500 hectares of forest is an area which the Russian military destroyed in 2008. The rest, more than 200 hectares, was an untouched old forest.

The National Forest Agency will start studying the territory when special services stop patrolling the territory. Afterwards, the loss will be counted and the action plan will be written .

The National Forest Agency does not intend to start working on forest restoration and the Ministry states that at this stage they will be observing the area. The specialists recommend to start preparing for the restoration of Borjomi Gorge immediately.

According to the German expert, the restoration of Borjomi forest will require about 3 million trees to be planted on a thousand hectares.
