12 Parties Address the European Court on Rustavi 2 Case

It is necessary to  sustain temporary measure of the European Court in connection with Rustavi 2 case - the Georgian opposition addresses with a letter  the European Court.

"We think it is critical for Georgian democracy to sustain  the temporary measure before resolving the dispute, otherwise the country will face the danger of disappearance of a vital for democracy  critical discourse and freedom of speech," - the statement reads.

The letter also says that Kibar Khalvashi is not an independent player but an influential agent of the government and all his actions  orchestrated by the government,  are aimed to bring Rustavi 2 under government`s influence.

The letter prepared by opposition parties and  signed by 12 party leaders, reads:

""As it is known, the Georgian government addressed  the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg with a request to abolish the temporary measure and   transfer the channel to Kibar Khalvashi before the end of the dispute.

"We want to state that with this move of  the Government has once again underlined its real aim - to remove from the country the largest disseminator of critical opinion. It is  important to consider the time context of the  request- it coincides with the pre-election period when the importance of critical media and the role of democracy is even more significant. We emphasize that Kibar Khalvashi is not an independent player and just a party in the channel ownership dispute . He is the government`s agent and all his actions, as well as the actions of the judiciary initiated and orchestrated by the government are aimed at getting Rustavi 2 under influence of the  government.

"Therefore, we consider it critically necessary for the Georgian democracy to sustain the temporary measure until the dispute is resolved. Otherwise, the country will face the danger of disappearance of a vital for democracy serious critical discourse and freedom of speech, " - the statement reads

If the  signs  of democracy and freedom of speech can still be found in Georgia  today  and there  still exists  a pluralistic media platform for opposition views to be voiced, it is only thanks to the European Court of Human Rights , which  has suspended   the court decision   orchestrated by the government and thus  preserved  "Rustavi2" as an independent and critical media. We hope that this measure will be sustained until the end of the  dispute.”
