Information that X-ray inspection systems, handed over by the US, are left unattended in the vicinity of the “Kazbegi” customs checkpoint is not true - Revenue Service

The Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia would like to respond to the information spread by various media that expensive equipment, namely, X-ray inspection systems, handed over to the Customs Department by the US, are left unattended in the vicinity of the “Kazbegi” customs checkpoint.

“In order to provide correct information to the public, we clarify that the mentioned information is not true.

We remind you that in April 2023, within the framework of one of the projects of Export Control and Related Border Security Assistance (EXBS) of the United States of America, the Customs Department of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance was given 3 x-ray luggage inspection scanners (RAPISCAN 628XR), the total value of which is 300,000 USD.

The scanners supplied are intended for Batumi and Kutaisi airports, as well as for the “Kazbegi” customs checkpoint.

In addition, we emphasize once again that the customs checkpoint “Kazbegi” is equipped with high-tech equipment for fast, safe and smooth scanning of motor vehicles.

As for the information spread by the media - at the moment, the primary/main technical parts of the metal structure required for the installation of X-ray scanners for various purposes are located at the customs checkpoint “Kazbegi”, which are securely protected 24/7, and at this stage the final procedures necessary for infrastructure works are underway.

We would also like to point out that rehabilitation works are actively being carried out at the customs checkpoint “Kazbegi” in parallel with the customs control procedures. In particular, a special exit equipped with modern customs control systems will be implemented for trucks carrying out international shipments.

The automatic back-up electrical distribution network has already been completely renewed, the arrangement of the maintenance hangar for inspecting vehicles and the construction of a new scale designed for long-term operation, designed for high-intensity weighing of heavy-duty vehicles, have been completed.

After the completion of the design work, the Revenue Service will give the interested persons an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the control/scanning process”, - reads the statement of the agency.
