Black Sea submarine electricity cable project will enhance energy security not only of Europe, but also of South Caucasus region - Davitashvili

Georgian Economy Minister highlighted the importance of facilitating the project for the Black Sea submarine cable, which aims to create a new transmission route to deliver green energy from the South Caucasus to Europe, for the country’s integration into the European Union. Levan Davitashvili talked about this issue at the 8th ministerial session on the project in Bucharest.

“In the process of integration with the EU, the Black Sea submarine electricity cable project has a special significance for us. Four countries have united to implement this ambitious project - it will contribute to the energy security of Europe, and not only Europe, but also the South Caucasus and region as a whole.

Within the framework of the goals of the EU, we must strive for the transition to renewable energy in the future, the transition to green energy is the most important agenda not only for the EU member states, but also for Georgia, since we are a candidate country and we attach great importance to participation in this project. I believe the meeting was very productive, and the joint venture will accelerate the fulfilment of existing commitments. It’s also symbolic that the venture will be based in Bucharest, given Romania’s key role in the project.

This project is particularly important because we do not have a direct land border with the EU, and the Black Sea is our only connection. Access to affordable, reliable, and secure energy from the South Caucasus is crucial. Notably, significant progress is being made in renewable energy development in Georgia and Azerbaijan”, - said the Minister.

He further mentioned that Georgia was advancing new projects in hydropower, solar, and wind energy, which would position the country as a reliable green energy supplier for the EU.
