Manipulative campaign targeting the staffing of Precinct Election Commissions through artificially organized complaints continues - CEC

In the preparatory process for the October 26, 2024 Parliamentary Elections, Election Administration (EA) of Georgia constantly cares to provide precise information to the public. In this regard, discussion of threats and tendencies that are already revealed in the actions of certain political parties is of utmost importance. It is noteworthy that these actions are the exact repetition of the tactics used during the 2020 Elections that implies damaging both the EA of Georgia and electoral environment by using the procedural means.

As Spokesperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia, Natia Ioseliani has stated at today’s briefing, this time, the issue involves an organized effort by one of the election subjects to file an overwhelming number of complaints pertaining to the completely transparent decision-making process of electing heads and members of Precinct Election Commissions (PEC).

“The 15 complaints with nearly identical contents were submitted at the CEC of Georgia on September 9, yesterday. Sole difference between them was the names of District Election Commissions and the signatory individuals. It is clear that the goal of this coordinated complaint filing is twofold. On one hand, it seeks to prolong baseless discussions about the alleged bias of individuals elected by the election commissions, a matter the EA had informed the public about beforehand. On the other hand, by artificially inflating the number of complaints, it aims to undermine the electoral process and erode public trust in the elections.

Unfortunately, certain political groups have chosen to discredit the electoral process rather than conduct it in a peaceful and professional manner. In doing so, they have repeatedly targeted the Election Administration. However, in contrast, the EA of Georgia has spared no effort and will do so in the future to administer the October 26 Elections in accordance with best international standards.

It is clear that we examine each complaint as per the applicable legislation, however, we will keep the provision of information to voters and stakeholders regarding the challenges and tendencies that may cause the damage to the electoral process. We would like to remind each political subject that elections are a common cause, and we, each of us, have a responsibility for conducting the electoral process in a peaceful and professional environment in the way that is respectful for the voters’ interest”.
