Georgia will not participate at the ambassadorial level in the Ministerial on Connectivity, scheduled for October 20 in Luxembourg - MFA

The European External Action Service`s decision to invite a Georgian ambassador-level delegation to the ministerial meeting in Luxembourg reflects a frivolous attitude, ignoring not only geopolitical considerations but also basic geographical reality, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

"Georgia will not participate at the level of Ambassador in the Ministerial on Connectivity scheduled for October 20 in Luxembourg, to which the EEAS invited the foreign ministers of Central Asian and Eastern Partnership countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan.

Given the importance of connectivity and Georgia`s crucial role, such an invitation is unacceptable, and the basis for this approach remains unclear. The Georgian side had informed the EEAS weeks earlier of its position regarding participation in the meeting.

Considering Georgia`s significance in both regional security and connectivity, it is in the interest of EU member states to engage Georgia at the appropriate level in these discussions.

The invitation of Georgia`s ambassador reflects a frivolous attitude, denies geopolitical and geographical reality, and represents another attempt to use Georgia’s participation for political speculation and to fuel polarization in the country. We trust that most EU member states recognize Georgia`s strategic importance and value their partnership with our country. We trust that the majority of EU member states are fully aware of the geopolitical context, value their partnership with Georgia, recognize its role as a vital link between Europe and Asia, and do not share the attitude expressed by the EU External Action Service", - reads the statement of the Georgian Foreign Office.
