Tbilisi City Court has sentenced Giorgi Gakharia to imprisonment as a preventive measure. He has already been charged in absentia for the events of June 2019 and the Chorchana incident.

At today`s session, the court considered the Chorchana incident.

According to the investigative agency, on August 24, 2019, the then Minister of Internal Affairs, Giorgi Gakharia, who was also the Secretary and Permanent Member of the National Security Council, unilaterally decided to erect an additional police checkpoint along the occupation line near the village of Chorchana. As a result, 100 hectares of forest remained outside the control of the central government.

Criminal proceedings against Gakharia are also ongoing for the June 20 episode. The Prosecutor`s Office accuses him of organizing intentional serious harm to health of more than two people and exceeding his official authority.
