The capital's main avenue will be fully rehabilitated and transformed into a modern, safe, and comfortable space. Such a statement made today the Mayor of Tbilisi.

“The launch of the project for the full rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue was delayed due to certain reasons. The tender was announced several times but failed. Companies did not participate. Rustaveli Avenue is the “calling card” of our capital, both visually and historically. The avenue, which has seen much joy, victory, pain, and sorrow, must absolutely be so well-ordered and modern that guests visiting our country and the local population feel a sense of pride”, - said Kakha Kaladze.

As he noted, the works will start on July 23 at 00:00, from which time all types of vehicular traffic will be completely restricted on Rustaveli Avenue and a section of Merab Kostava Street.

“The rehabilitation area covers the territory from Tamar Chovelidze Street to Freedom Square, a total of up to 2 km of the roadway. In the first phase of the project, underground communication networks will be upgraded - the central water supply, sewage, drainage, and gas supply systems will be replaced. Also, overhead wires will be placed in underground cable channels. Underground waste collection bins will also be installed. In addition, modern road infrastructure will be set up, the roadway and pavement will be renewed, and asphalt paving will be laid. The outdoor lighting network will be fully replaced, and a modern LED lighting system will be installed”, - explained the Mayor.

According to him, a significant part of the project will be dedicated to greening: “Existing green spaces will be renewed and trees and plants will be planted, which will make Rustaveli Avenue an even more attractive and ecologically improved environment. Special attention will be paid to pedestrian safety and comfort - above-ground pedestrian crossings will be arranged, road signs will be installed, and horizontal road markings will be drawn. The avenue’s infrastructure will be fully adapted for people with disabilities”.

As Kakha Kaladze added, the works, which will be carried out by the Municipal Department of Infrastructure Development of Tbilisi City Hall, will be completed by the end of November.
