The US ambassador expresses full support to the Public Defender`s Institute and Ucha Nanuashvili. Jan Kelly responded to the statements made by the government in recent days against Nanuashvili.

The diplomat says that the Ombudsman Institute is the most important part of democracy and hopes that the government will choose an independent candidate again.

"The United States, our government supports the Public Defender"s Institute and Mr. Ucha Nanuashvili, because we think this is an essential part of democracy. The government, the authorities have some rights, but the Public Defender plays a big role in ensuring their accountability, direct dialogue between the citizens and the government, ensuring that the citizens`problems are brought to the government. Consequently, we hope that whoever comes after Mr. Ucha Nanuashvili as the Public Defender will be independent and will continue this activity, "- Jan Kelly said.
