Draft resolution regarding the draft law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” in Georgia to be voted today in the European Parliament

Today, in the European Parliament, a vote will be held on the resolution regarding the draft law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” in Georgia.

The debate on the draft resolution “On attempts to reintroduce the law of foreign agents in Georgia and its restrictions on civil society” was held in the European Parliament on April 23, and the vote on the resolution will be held on April 25.

The author of the summary draft of the main text of the resolution is 40 MEPs from 5 different parties of the European Parliament.

In the summary version of the draft resolution, it is noted that the said draft law violates two of the 9 steps presented to Georgia by the European Commission, namely Step 1 (which involves fighting disinformation directed against the European Union and its values) and Step 9 (which involves ensuring the freedom of civil society to act).

It is noted that the European Union expects Georgia, as a candidate country, to comply with the Association Agreement and other international obligations, including the recommendations issued by the European Commission on November 8, 2023. It is also noted that the European Council decided to grant Georgia candidate status only on the basis that Tbilisi would take these steps.
