Strasbourg speaks about need to take into considerations recommendations of Venice Commission

The rapporteurs on Georgia informed the Council of Europe Monitoring Committee on their position regarding constitutional amendments. A comprehensive report will on the results of the visit to Georgia will be published later . During their visit to Georgia, the rapporteurs held meetings on the draft Constitution with representatives of the Constitutional Commission, the ruling team and the opposition.

Earlier, the Georgian ruling team was warned in Strasbourg that the recommendations of the Venice Commission should be taken into consideration.

"I am waiting for the approval of the constitutional reform. Special attention should be paid to electoral reform. This promise was not fulfilled after winning the election. There are some details that cause some concern. I can not say that it contradicts basic principles and standards. Some European countries do not allow election blocs. You get such a system when the votes of the parties that do not pass the threshold are awarded to the winning party. But we suspect that this should be appropriate with regard to Georgia, " -said Boris Silevichi, a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Majority MP Tamar Chugoshvili said that the talk was focused on taking into account of the recommendations of the Venice Commission in the process of constitutional reform.

Davit Bakradze, a member of the Movement for Freedom - European Georgia has made a statement.

"We must understand that the formation of normal electoral system and the adoption of normal constitutional amendments will be one of the determinants of our future. It is logicalall the issues were underlined in this report, "Bakradze said.

The speakers emphasized Rustavi 2case as well. Representatives of the Georgian Dream say that the ruling party respects the decision of the Human Rights Court of Strasbourg.

"We respect the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and have full readiness to cooperate with the court," - Eka Beselia said.

As for the opposition, they say Rustavi 2"s case is crucial to Europe.

"The decision of the European Court of Human Rights was unprecedented. Everybody expressed hope that the government will not question the decision of the Strasbourg Court and will not hurt Rustavi 2, " - said Giorgi Kandelaki, a member of the European Georgia.
