20 opposition parties demand from ruling party to compromise on constitutional amendments

The ruling party is still trying to get political support of the opponents on the draft constitution and does not exclude holding another dialogue.

Despite the fact that the parliamentary majority announced as failed on Friday the talks with the opposition on the constitution, today the Parliamentary Chairperson still demanded the list of the demands from the opposition.

The ruling party claims that the parliamentary minority and the non-parliamentary opposition can not agree on the positions in terms of consensus and that is why the consensus is not possible.

The opposition itself calls the majority`s allegation "irresponsible".

As 20 parties claim, the majority has changed positions a number of times which is incomprehensible to them. The opposition think that the ruling team has never been ready for dialogue and the Georgian Dream is trying to approve a one-party constitution.

Twenty parties demand in exchange for supporting constitutional amendments: to abolish the majoritarian system, to allow parties to create election blocks, to loer the threshold and preserve direct elections of the president.

Whether the Venice Commission`s mediation will be held in Strasbourg on September 6 is still unknown. The opposition is meeting for consultations on the action plan tomorrow. A special appeal will be made to the Venice Commission at the meeting.

Secretary of the Venice Commission, Thomas Markets, told InterpressNews today that no news was yet to be heard from Tbilisi.
