Penalties will range from 500 to 1000 GEL - restrictions on tobacco smoking will be launched from May 1

From May 1, smoking will be restricted. Limitations will affect both the open space and closed public space where there is no appropriate ash box.However, the smokers will be fined if they smoke while walking in such places, as for example, Rustaveli Avenue.

Smoking is also prohibited in areas where adolescents aged under 18 are present. Tobacco smoking is also prohibited in stadiums.

Penalties range from 500 to 1000 GEL. Smoking is generally prohibited in a closed public space, for example in a café and a restaurant.

"At the expense of very little discomfort, which is going outside for smoking, we maintain health and lives of 2100 of our citizens who die every year from passive smoking. It"s great that tomorrow, these people, including children, will be saved. In addition, the measures that come into force from May 1 will help us to prevent future generations from harmful impact of tobacco, " - said Akaki Zoidze, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Health Care and Social Issues.

Kakha Ghvinianidze, a member of Tobacco Control Alliance, says that in relation to smoking, the exception remains temporary in case of casinos, cigara bars and penitentiary establishments.

According to statistical data, tobacco consumption in women doubled in 2016 in comparison to 2010 , according to the head of the United Nations Population Development Fund, Lela Bakradze.
