Spain fire - 4 dead in Valencia apartment block blaze, says official

At least four people have died in Spain after a fire gutted a multi-storey apartment block in Valencia, with firefighters battling high winds to put out the blaze, writes The Guardian.

Fourteen people, including a seven-year-old child, have been treated for injuries of varying degrees, and 12 of them were transferred to hospitals, according to emergency services.

The emergency services earlier said seven people were lightly injured, mostly from smoke inhalation.

The toll could rise, with 19 people missing, a source on the city council who asked not to be named told Agence France-Presse.

“It can be confirmed that four people have died”, Jorge Suarez Torres, deputy director of emergency services for the Valencia region, told reporters.
