European Union stands by the Georgian people and their choice for the European future, door of the EU remains open - European Commissioners statement

The European Union is saddened by the statement of Irakli Kobakhidze about the decision of Georgian Dream not to proceed with the start of accession negotiations with the European Union and to refuse the financial support of the EU until 2028. Such a statement was released by the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security/Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas and the European Commissioner on Enlargement Issues, Marta Kos.

“We note that this statement marks a departure from the policy of all the previous governments of Georgia and the European aspirations of the absolute majority of the Georgian people, as stipulated in the Constitution of Georgia. We would like to remind you that the actions of the Georgian government and the democratic backsliding led to the de facto suspension of the accession process already in June of this year, and that the financial assistance of the European Union, which was intended directly for the Georgian government, is currently suspended.

The EU strongly condemns the violence against peaceful protesters who are firmly defending their European and democratic future. These actions of the Georgian government have a direct impact on our relationship.

The Georgian authorities must respect the right to freedom of assembly and expression and refrain from using force against peaceful protesters, politicians and media representatives. All acts of violence must be investigated and perpetrators held accountable.

The EU reiterates its serious concerns about the country’s continued democratic decline, including the violations that occurred during the pre-election period and the parliamentary elections. In this context, the EU looks forward to the final report of the OSCE/ODIHR and its recommendations.

The EU stands by the Georgian people and their choice for the European future. The door of the EU remains open, and the return of Georgia to European values and the path to joining the EU is in the hands of the Georgian leadership”, - reads the statement.
