US urges its citizens to leave Belarus immediately

The United States has urged its citizens to leave Belarus immediately and has updated its travel advisory to Level 4: Do Not Travel status due to existing dangers for Americans, the official website of the US Department of State reports.

The advisory highlights the risks for US citizens, including the arbitrary enforcement of local laws by the Belarusian authorities, the risk of detention, and Belarus’s support for Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The US Department of State also reminded that consular services for US citizens in Belarus are unavailable following the closure of the US Embassy in Minsk on February 28, 2022. This means that individuals with dual citizenship may be denied consular assistance if detained.

The Belarusian government may also close border crossing points with Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Ukraine without prior notice. These actions increase the risks for foreigners who could become stranded in the country.

According to the Department of State, the Belarusian Security Services monitor citizens’ electronic communications within the country. There have been reports of foreigners being detained due to information on their devices, even if it was created outside Belarus.

Due to the existing risks for US citizens, a number of recommendations have been issued: Avoid public demonstrations, as arbitrary action by law enforcement may occur / Review evacuation plans in case of emergencies / Leave the country immediately through available international routes.

Furthermore, the US warned its citizens to avoid public protests, as the Belarusian government may use force against protesters and arrest foreigners without just cause.
