The country has a new Patriarch – following the end of an era spanning nearly half a century, a new chapter for the Georgian Orthodox Church began on May 12, 2026, at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.

Metropolitan Daniel placed the ancient patriarchal mitre upon the head of Catholicos-Patriarch Shio III.

Shio III – Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi, and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazia – the solemn ceremony of the new Patriarch`s enthronement was performed in full compliance with church canon law.
