Parliament discusses constitutional amendments in first reading - opposition does not support changes


The parliament discussed the constitutional amendments in the first hearing. The lawmakers will vote  for the country"s main law tomorrow. It is about abolishing the bonus system received by constitutional reform, allowing to form the election blocs, one-time for 2020 maintenance, amendments to articles on freedom of religion and Articles on the Constitutional Court, as well as the terminological changes in the article on electing the President.

The changes are not supported by parliamentary minority who criticize the ruling team.

Irakli Abesadze, the member of the parliamentary minority faction, member of the Faction "European Georgia - Movement for Freedom", criticizes the Parliament Speaker and the majority for adopting the decision on constitutional amendments.

According to Abesadze, Irakli Kobakhidze correctly evaluated the current situation when he noted that "the ruling team won this process". According to the opposition MP, the ruling team won because it did not take into account the opinion of the broader civil society.

Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze does not share the critique of the opponents and notes that the final project will provide for a sophisticated parliamentary governance system.
