Experts speak about the threat of escalation of the situation in the Pankisi Gorge. Analysts say that if the authorities are unable to properly conduct the investigation and to properly inform the population, the situation can be extremely tense in the region.

"The Russian Federation may use this situation in order to escalate relations with the local population and the authorities," said Dimitri Shashkin.

"It is not in our interest that Georgia, especially the Pankisi region, is perceived as a safe haven for terrorists, ," Nodar Kharshiladze says.
