"Georgia recognises the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, as the Interim President of Venezuela,"- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia releases a special statement over the developments in Venezuela .

" Georgia recognises the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, as the Interim President of Venezuela and expresses its full confidence in the National Assembly as the only legitimate body elected by the Venezuelan people. Georgia has repeatedly stated its firm position that the country recognises neither the legitimacy of Nicolas Maduro as the president of Venezuela nor the results of the presidential elections conducted in Venezuela, on 20 May 2018.

Georgia fully supports the efforts of Juan Guaido to create an interim government, encourage the country’s democratic transformation, the rule of law and the protection of human rights. Georgia hopes that the political process in Venezuela will develop peacefully and the Venezuelan people will have the opportunity to vote in free and fair elections.

Georgia expresses the hope that the legitimate government of Venezuela will firmly support the fundamental principle of international law – respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of the internationally recognized borders of independent states.

Georgia remains committed to develope mutually beneficial partner relations with the legitimate government of Venezuela both in bilateral and multilateral formats, with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia,"- reads the statement.
