Third sector criticizes High Council of Justice regarding initiative to make offence of judges punishable

 

According to the initiative of the Council of Justice the offence of judges will be punishable. The NGOs claim that determining the restriction of criticism threatens not only the freedom of speech and expression, but also the development and independence of the court.

According to them, the restriction of criticism can not be improve the court and the grievances existing in the judiciary.

Sopho Verdzeuli, Institutional Reform Support Program Director, explains that this initiative of the Council members is a response to criticism of high-profile cases.

"Such initiatives generate false expectations in both judges and society, and I think this initiative is a response to the very heavy criticism that has been heard recently," Sopho Vedzlishvili says.

Ana Natsvlishvili, Chairperson of Georgian Young Lawyers" Association calls on the court to take criticism and take note of the remarks.
