August 8 is the day of the memory of those killed during the 2008 Russian-Georgian war. Politicians and relatives of the deceased will visit today the military cemetery. The provocations ofOssetian separatists and Russian military units mobilized in the Tskhinvali region on August 7-8 2008 turned into a large-scale armed conflict. As a result of a five-day war between Russia and Georgia, Georgia has lost more than 400 citizens - more than half were civilians.

After the war, Russian occupation forces occupied the Kodori Gorge and a large part of Shida Kartli region, after which the process of creeping occupation continued.
