Woman claims she wandered sewer system for 3 weeks until she was rescued

CBS12 News is learning more about the woman pulled from a sewer in Delray Beach Tuesday morning. Her name is Lyndsey Kennedy and she is 43-years-old.

A woman called 911 Tuesday morning to say she could hear a woman yelling for help from a sewer drain at the intersection of West Atlantic Avenue and SW 11th Avenue.

Kennedy told police that on March 3, she went for a swim in a canal near her boyfriend’s house. She told them that while she was swimming, she came across a doorway near a shallow part of the canal. Kennedy said she entered the doorway and noticed a tunnel.

She claimed she became curious to where the tunnel led and continued to follow it. She told police the tunnel led to another tunnel and so on until she realized she was lost. Kennedy told police she had been walking around the sewer system for approximately three weeks.

Kennedy said on Tuesday when she saw light she stayed in the place she was rescued because she could see people walking pass her. Kennedy was reported missing by her boyfriend on March 3. Police said Kennedy appeared to be coherent and didn"t feel she needed to be Baker Acted.

The police report states Kennedy’s mother was contacted. She told police her daughter has a history of mental illness and is a frequent user of illegal narcotics. She also said that her daughter has a history of doing odd things and making bad decisions. Sources close to the investigation say Kennedy has been released from the hospital.
