Speaker of the Georgian Parliament highlighted the approach used by some Western partners in their criticism of the Georgian Dream’s plans to ban the United National Movement following a “public legal process” by pointing out similar developments in the West.
His comments came after French prosecutors asked that opposition leader Marine Le Pen be found guilty of embezzlement, sentenced to prison and barred from running for public office, while over a hundred MPs from various factions of the German Bundestag submitted a petition to ban the right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany.
“In France, they are going to arrest the leader of the second most popular political force. In Germany, they are going to ban the second most popular party. In America, an opposition presidential candidate [Donald Trump] was threatened with 561 years in prison, and only being elected President saved him. And the prosecutor who was investigating this case announced his resignation”, the Speaker said in a social media message… Some see the speck in another’s eye and ignore the log in their own”, - wrote Shalva Papuashvili on his Facebook page.
