Baramidze`s statement regarding the treatment of prisoners during the war fought for Georgia`s territorial integrity is extremely irresponsible and damages Georgia`s national interests - Tabatadze

The statement made by Giorgi Baramidze concerning the treatment of prisoners during the war fought for Georgia`s territorial integrity is extremely irresponsible and undermines Georgia`s national interests, said today Alexander Tabatadze, Chair of the Defence and Security Committee.

"Such statements are an insult to our veterans and to the heroes who gave their lives in battle while defending Georgia`s independence and territorial integrity. It is unacceptable to promote narratives for political purposes that cast doubt on the dignity of Georgian servicemen and fighters and create false perceptions both within the country and abroad.

It is particularly alarming that such statements are in direct contradiction to the Georgian Government`s reconciliation policy, which is founded on promoting the peaceful resolution of conflicts, rebuilding trust, and respecting the principles of international humanitarian law.

Under the current conditions of occupation, when Georgia is defending its political and legal positions on the international stage on a daily basis, every public statement carries particular significance. Allegations of this kind may be exploited against Georgia by those forces that have sought to discredit our country for years.

Such statements weaken Georgia`s position in both the political and legal spheres and provide additional arguments to those acting against our national interests.

National security, the country`s defence capabilities, the dignity of our servicemen, and Georgia`s international interests must never become instruments of domestic political confrontation. These are matters of shared national responsibility, and everyone should approach them with the utmost care", - said Alexander Tabatadze.
