Georgia’s economy is developing successfully, as confirmed by economic growth indicators and the accumulation of international reserves - Marnix van Rij

Alternate Executive Director of the IMF assessed that Georgia’s economy is developing successfully. Marnix van Rij pointed to robust growth indicators, expanding international reserves, tight fiscal deficit control, and strong foreign direct investment as clear evidence.

Meeting with the Georgian delegation on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Thailand, Marnix van Rij highlighted pressing global challenges, including the war in the Middle East, high energy prices, inflationary pressures, and the broader fallout from the war in Ukraine.

“The world is facing significant geopolitical shifts. We will support Georgia’s aspiration to receive technical assistance. At this stage, the country does not require an IMF programme; however, technical assistance remains important for capacity building and strengthening institutional capabilities”, - he noted.

Marnix van Rij also highlighted the National Bank of Georgia Governor’s participation in the Central Bank Governors’ discussion, noting that Natia Turnava will address the meeting.

As part of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Thailand, Natia Turnava and Minister of Finance Lasha Khutsishvili met with Bo Li, IMF Deputy Managing Director, and Jihad Azour, Director of the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department.
