New rule of electing Prosecutor General- "National Platform" addresses the Parliament with the draft law

Members of the National Platform of Georgia offer an alternative bill to the Parliament, which envisages new regulation for electing a new Prosecutor General. The organizations within the platform suggest that the acting regulation does not exclude the government"s influence because the final decision of the selection committee depends on the government.

The National Platform offers the ruling team to exclude the Minister of Justice from the participation in the selection of the Chief Prosecutor. Also, according to the draft law, eight candidates should be nominated by MPs, 5 by the Prosecutors Conference, and 2 by the Public Defender.

"This system is corrupt and a good prosecutor can not be elected by a bad system. This is a serious mistake. So it is very important that we make concrete steps. The Parliament should suspend the process, change the system and change the main prosecutor, "- said Lasha Tugushi, director of the Liberal Academy Tbilisi Foundation.

Executive director of the Association of Regional Broadcasters (GARB) says that the main challenge today is to demand justice for ordinary citizens. According to Natia Kuprashvili, it is very important to have an independent investigative structure.

Vakhtang Khmaladze calls on the government to elaborate a regulation that would minimize political influence on the process of selecting the Chief Prosecutor. Otherwise Khmaladze predicts that this government will end badly.
