NGOs talk about non-competitive pre-election environment for political parties

The NGO started consultations with the State Audit State Service on the results of monitoring of donations received by political parties in July.

According to acting General Auditor Nino Lomjaria, the State Audit Office will study almost all donations which amounted to several thousand GEL.

As Nino Lomjaria told journalists, active donations of the parties started at the end of July.

"Prior to that, there were no substantial donations. We will check all the donations that exceeded several thousand GEL and will determine whether the donor had the appropriate material resources in order to establish the origin of the donation and have adequate response. At this stage, the biggest donation has been received by the Georgian Dream, which is followed by the European Georgia and Girchi. Donations of other parties are insignificant. We have begun to investigate the donors of these three parties. Donations were made both by physical and legal persons," said Lomjaria.

Gigi Chikhladze, a lawyer for Transparency International Georgia, claims that the ruling party has received the most donation and this has become a common practice in Georgia.

Executive Director of the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, Mikheil Benidze, said that the Georgian Dream`s leadership in terms of donations was not surprising. According to him, such a distribution of funds put under question the competitive pre-election environment for political parties.
