Parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition send appeal to Gianni Buquicchio

The parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition parties have sent a joint letter to the Chairman of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe on the absence of consensus in the constitutional amendment between the Georgian ruling party and the opposition.

In the letter, the Georgian Dream is accused of changing the electoral system and refuting a dialogue for the purpose of maintaining the power.

"It is clear that the government`s desire is to maintain a majoritarian-proportional electoral system to legitimize the so-called" undistributed mandates "in their favor and abolish the rule of direct election of the president and do it without consent of any other political force and civil society .

"Thus, the responsibility of the absence of consensus in the constitutional reform process is fully imposed on the Georgian Dream government".
Georgia`s opposition political forces expressed gratitude to the Venice Commission for assistance in the process of constitutional reform and expressed the hope that the close cooperation with the Venice Commission will support our country on the path of democratic development, " - the letter reads.
